I don't want to address all of your individual concerns but will instead make a blanket statement about where the industry is heading. I believe, in addition to the many viewers that already own a widescreen tv, there are many more riding the fence and just waiting for a sign before they take the plunge.

It's actually a widescreen computer monitor; at the time I couldn't find any small screen HDTV that I liked better. The tuner is a DirecTV H20. I also have a DVD player (480p) and LD player (480i) connected. My 50 year old eyes can tell the difference between HD (and this is DirecTV's compressed HDTV!

I myself prefer widescreen DVDs even though I have a 4:3 set; but that is partly because I intend to buy a widescreen set sooner or later.
